Exclusive: Twilight Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg Shares Her Vision For Breaking Dawn and Just How Gory It Will Be!

Now that Eclipse has hit theaters and broken box office records, Twilight fans are already anxiously awaiting the next onscreen chapter in Bella and Edward's love story: Breaking Dawn. We talked exclusively to Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter behind all of the Twilight films, to find out what we can expect from the final two installments. She weighed in on whether or not Bella's childbirth scene will make it to the screen, shared her most surprising fan moment, and dished on her creative relationship with Stephenie Meyer.

PopSugar: How did you feel about the decision to split Breaking Dawn into two movies?

Melissa Rosenberg: Relief, actually, because it was going to be quite a challenge to condense such a large book into one movie. That's always the challenge with all of these and, more so, Breaking Dawn. Having a little more room to breathe is nice . . . on the other hand, there's also the challenge of making sure there's enough to fill two movies.

PS: We've heard there are some scenes you want to avoid showing on screen in Breaking Dawn. For example, Bella giving birth. Can you tell us why?

MR: That was a misquote. The childbirth — all the scenes, I feel — should be on screen. I think perhaps what I was referring to was, would we actually see Edward's teeth through the placenta? I don't think so. I don't think we need to see that, and if someone needs to see that, I think they should take a look at that. [Laughs.] I believe it will be implied, but I don't think we'll see teeth in the placenta.

PS: What responsibility do you feel toward the fans? Are they on your mind during the writing process?

MR: The responsibility I feel to the fans? Well, there's one: making them happy, of course. I want people to enjoy the movie and not feel that I killed their favorite novel! But what I've realized is, you can't satisfy all the people. But the real weight that I feel is a very heavy responsibility, knowing that a lot of women and young girls are seeing this, and watching to make sure that what's portrayed in the film is that Bella's a strong female role model. That the messages they're getting are positive ones.

PS: What's the craziest or most surprising fan reaction you've experienced?

MR: You can't call it crazy, but crazy wonderful. I just came back from Paris. I was there [for a press junket] with some of the actors: Daniel Cudmore, Edi Gathegi, Michael Welch, and Alex Meraz. At the end, there was this closing ceremony and we were told there was a surprise for us, and they led us out on the stage . . . and the entire audience was sort of standing in this darkened theater, almost as if in prayer. It was very odd. And then after a moment, Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" starts up, and they break into a dance they've been choreographing for three days. This wonderful, very unified dance, and it was amazing. We were stunned. A thousand pairs of hands all raised to the beat at the same time — it's a powerful experience . . . I wondered, could that have happened anywhere else but in France? Would American audiences have been too cool?

PS: How involved is Stephenie Meyer in the writing process and what is your relationship with her like?

MR: Stephenie is very involved. My relationship with her has only gotten better with every movie. When I met her and began to engage, I had no reason to be protective. I found her to be extremely collaborative and a tremendous resource. So I began to engage her more and that happened more on New Moon and even more in Eclipse . . . She weighs in on every draft of the outline, every draft of the script. She's on set. She's very involved.

PS: What is one of your favorite scenes from the books or films? Is there one you've especially enjoyed writing or look forward to writing?

MR: There are a number. I think seeing Bella as a vampire and her adjusting to her powers and embracing them, those are all really fun scenes to write. Particularly when you picture Kristen Stewart playing her, and the way she's embodied Bella as a sort of awkward, fidgety persona. When she turns into a vampire, all of that goes away.

PopSugar: Que pensez vous de la décision de diviser Breaking Dawn en 2 films?

Melissa Rosenberg: Du soulagement en fait car cela aurait été un sacré défi de condenser ce livre en un seul film . Ce fut toujours un défi pour les autres livres mais encore plus pour Breaking Dawn. Avoir un peu plus d'espace me permet de respirer un peu . . . mais d'un autre côté, il y a un autre défi: avoir de quoi remplir les deux films.

PS:Nous avons entendu dire qu'il y a des scènes que vous voulez éviter de montrer sur grand écran dans Breaking Dawn. Par exemple , Bella qui accouche Pouvez vous nous dire pourquoi?

MR: On m'a mal cité . L'accouchement — toutes les autres scènes — doivent être à l'écran. Je pense que vous faites plutôt référence à verrons nous Edward planté ses dents dans le placenta? Je ne pense pas . Je ne pense pas qu'on doive voir ça , t si les gens ont besoin de voir ça , je pense qu'il devrait jeter un coup d'oeil à ça . [Rires .] Je pense que ce sera sous entendu mais je ne pense pas qu'on verra des dents dans un placenta.

PS: Quelle responsabilité avez vous face aux fans? Les avez vous en tête quand vous rédigez un script?

MR: Ma responsabilité face aux fans ? Il y en a une : les rendre heureux bien sûr .Je veux que les gens apprécient le film et qu'ils ne pensent pas que j'ai tué leur livre préféré! Mais je me suis rendue compte qu'on ne pouvait satisfaire tout le monde . Mais je sens une réelle responsabilité sachant que de nombreuses femmes et de jeunes filles iront voir le film , et m'assurer que dans le film, on voit Bella comme un modèle de femme forte. Que les messages qu'ils reçoivent soient positifs. .


PS: Quelle est la réaction la plus surprenante ou la plus folle d'un fan?

MR: On ne peut pas dire fou mais merveilleux .Je reviens de Paris. IJ'étais là bas pour la covention avec des acteurs : Daniel Cudmore, Edi Gathegi, Michael Welch, et Alex Meraz. PS: Quelle est l'implication de Stephenie Meyer dans l'écriture du scénario et quelle est votre relation avec elle ?

MR: Stephenie est très impliquée. Ma relation avait elle est devenue de mieux en mieux au fil des films . Quand je l'ai rencontré , je n'avais aucune raison d'être protectrice , je trouvé qu'elle était très coopérative et que c'était une ressource incroyable. Donc j'ai fait plus appel à elle dans New Moon et encore plus dans Eclipse . . . Elle donne son point de vue sur chaque histoire de l'intrigue , chaque partie du script. Elle est sur le plateau . Elle est très investie.

PS: Quelle est votre scène préférée du livre ou des films ? Y en a t il une que vous avez aimé écrire ou que vous avez hâte d'écrire?
MR: Il y en a des tas . Je pense que voir Bella en vampire et la voir ajuster ses pouvoirs en les acceptant ,ce sont des scènes marrantes à écrire . Surtout quand vous voyez Kristen Stewart qui l'incarne , et la façon dont elle est Bella avec sa maladresse et son immpatience . Quand elle devient vampire, tout ça s'en va.

In Breaking Dawn, what do you think Edward's evolution will be?

Pattinson: I haven't read it yet! I mean, it's weird - I'm starting it a month after this job and it's something I'm quite glad I haven't read it yet. I didn't intend to not read it until now, it's quite exciting. I have no idea, I just heard brief rumors about what happens in the story but I don't really know what happens at all

Your current haircut is shorter than Edward's. How are you going to go about getting your long hair back for Breaking Dawn?

Pattinson: I'm thinking maybe Edward got a haircut - it might be easier. I didn't even think about that when I got it cut, that is a bit silly. Vampires can cut their hair though, so I like the idea of Edward having a shaved head in the last one. That [would be] pretty cool.

How long have you known Breaking Dawn was going to be two films, and have you met with Bill Condon yet?

Pattinson: I found out about Breaking Dawn when the press release came out! Bill Condon I met briefly a few weeks ago, kind of by accident just before the MTV Awards, in a bar (laughs). He seemed great. He seemed like a really really nice guy, I haven't talked to him in detail about anything. But Gods and Monsters is an amazing movie. I think it's going to be good. I don't even know where they're going to shoot it yet or anything.

Since Breaking Dawn will be two movies, do you if one movie will be from your perspective and one will be from Rob's?

Lautner: I do know it will be two, which I am extremely excited about. It is going to be great. Bill Condon is doing both. I it going to be awesome and I can't wait to work with him.

Do you have a clause in your contract saying you have to keep your shirt on?

Lautner: No clause (laughs). Whatever the book says is most likely what we are going to do.

Would you ever do another film where you have to go shirtless again?

Lautner: I mean really, it all comes down to character. If I love the character, I love the story, and the character requires me to be shirtless, or if it requires me to lose thirty pounds, I'm ready to do it.

How do you think you will prepare yourself for the unique, romantic aspects that you will find yourself in?

Lautner: I haven't started thinking about it too much right now. We are focusing on Eclipse coming out. We are promoting that. Then after that I am focusing on Abduction. Then after that it will be Breaking Dawn. I'm sure as soon as we meet with Bill further down the road, we will go towards that, but that will be interesting.


Do you think the werewolves will go into a musical number?

Lautner: I think he actually already released a statement promising there would be no musical number in it (laughs). It is funny.

Now that you've done three of these are there things that you wish had made into the movie from the book that didn't?

Stewart: Yeah, totally - there are a million things. I mean every single time we watch one of the movies, especially when the cast watches it together, it's always an incredibly frustrating experience. That's why I'm glad that Breaking Dawn is going to be two movies, which I can finally say. So there's going to be less of that, less of having to lose stuff. I know you want specific things but I'm trying to think of one now but I can't.

How long have you known that Breaking Dawn was going to be two films, and how long will the shoot be?

Stewart: The shoot is going to be something like six months. We start in October. I think we're not going to be finished until maybe March or something, maybe February. I clearly don't really look at the schedule. I had to hold onto this forever. They've been talking about it for a really long time and we all definitely knew that it was going to be two movies forever now. It's been really hard not to say that. We're all really stoked on that.


Is there a scene that you particularly hope makes the movie?

Stewart: There are a million and we haven't even shot it yet. I can't wait to see [?] and I can't wait to get married and have a kid. It's all of that. It's going to be crazy.
