À l'occasion du triste anniversaire du 11septembre,Nick Osborne le producteur de RM s'exprime:

As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks approaches, television will commemorate the day with specials and documentaries. But at the nation's cineplexes, there is considerably less ceremony. One documentary, Rebirth, opens in Manhattan Wednesday.

Hollywood has taken only sporadic steps on the big screen to depict one of the biggest events in U.S. history. The reason might be simple math.

"The economics of doing a feature film based around 9/11 are very, very difficult," says Jason Kliot, producer of 2002's The Guys, which portrayed a NYFD captain struggling to eulogize the men who died that day.

VIDEO: Where were you on 9/11?

"People are going to movies to be entertained, more and more," he says. "They can watch 9/11 programs at home on TV or their computer. But they are looking for the spectacular after paying the high price for movies, the popcorn, the babysitter. They want to feel good."

That does not happen in 9/11 films, even the emotionally redemptive The Guys, developed from a stage production launched blocks from the still-smoldering World Trade Center rubble. Kliot hoped the movie would become part of the country's healing, but it became clear that the film would be lost as the country marched to war in Iraq in 2003.

"We started to imagine, who is going to want to feel the pain of 9/11 when the war is going on in their living room?" he says. The Guys left theaters quickly after its release in April 2003.

Filmmakers must also assure sensitive audiences that their intentions are pure. Mike Binder struggled with that when he wrote and directed Reign Over Me, starring Adam Sandler as a man who is traumatized by his family's death on 9/11.

"People were worried about Adam Sandler in the role," Binder says. "Is he going to make a mockery of it? Is he going to be goofy?"

Binder and Sandler assured victims' groups that the actor was taking the role seriously, but the film floundered after its release in 2007.

"If I didn't make it, I don't know if I'd go to a movie about a guy who has lost his family to 9/11," Binder says. "We made it with passion and purpose, but you pay for it."

Films such as Oliver Stone's World Trade Center (2006) and Paul Greengrass' critically lauded United 93 (2006) found respectable audiences while fending off criticism when sensitivities were still high. The criticism even stung films with a tangential relationship to the attack, such as 2010's Remember Me. The Robert Pattinson drama featured a 9/11 surprise ending, which took a "drubbing" says producer Nick Osborne.

"Everyone was, to a certain extent, terrified of doing it," Osborne says. "It's such a sensitive topic. But it was the right ending."

James Hanlon, co-director of the Emmy Award-winning documentary 9/11, believes audiences will become more receptive to feature films. The premise will be tested with the holiday release of the Tom Hanks/Sandra Bullock drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which deals with a son mourning a father lost in the attack.

Hanlon, a former firefighter, has updated his documentary for an airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sept. 11 on CBS. He's also writing a script for a 9/11 project he wants in theaters. "The arts can help us get over things," he says. "There is not one great story to be told from that day. There are a million."

Résumé:

Cet article parle de la difficulté à faire un film sur les attentats du 11 septembre. Mercredi , un documentaire , Rebirth, sortira en salles.
